June 2010

Welcome!

How would you feel about getting together with a group of other avid readers and spending a night talking about your favourite paranormal romance and urban fantasy books and authors? Can you imagine the laughs in the room, the buzz of conversation, the excitement of free giveaway books?

Well guess what?

Fangtastic Fiction is hosting the Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Australia and New Zealand dinner! Yes PRUFANZ here we come!

We've been tweeting about this idea and already have a lot of people interested - so it's on!

We're looking for a good venue in Sydney that won't cost the proverbial arm or leg and the dinner will be in September or October. We already know that we want to get sponsors for the dinner, a guest speaker, a range of authors and readers - and run a charity auction for the Benjamin Andrew Footpath Library. We're also thinking of a books wap, silent auction ....basically so many options for fun! However the main focus is going to be getting together and talking!

We've formed a group email to gather suggestions from people who are interested, so send us an email at info@fangtasticfiction.com if you'd like to join the email group.

Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse NovellaNew Twilight Novella!

With all the hype around Twilight, I'm sure many of you are aware of the release of the new novella from Ms Myers The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner

This is a very special release for two reasons. Firstly, as part of the larger publishing release, one dollar from each physical book sold will be donated to the American Red Cross!

Secondly, until the 5th July you can read it online for free! Yes... legally! (Although you you won’t be able to download it or print it out) .BreeTanner.com It's Stephenie Meyer's and her publisher's way of giving something back to fans.

So whether you buy the printed book or read it free, it's a win-win.

In case you thought that ebooks would kill off the printed book... this book sold 136,995 copies in the first week in UK and is sitting in top ten lists all over the world.

Competition

So who loves the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris??? And who has been watching the True Blood series and can't wait for series three to start?

If you're like us then you're giving a resounding 'YES' to both of these questions! Last month we had a stupendous competition for the entire (yes TEN books) Sookie Stackhouse series. Well, guess what?

Thanks to our friends at Orion/Hachette and Time Warner we now have Series One and Series Two of True Blood to give away! Weeeeheeee! (okay just give me a moment here because I'm very excited!)

For a chance to win the true Blood DVDs all you need to do is go to our home page http://www.fangtastic.com.au/ or http://www.fangtastic.co.nz and post a comment on the competition blog. Your comment must address why do you think that there has been such a growth in paranormal romance and urban fantasy books over the past decade? Why are we now seeing so many vampires, werewolves, angels damons, faeries and otherworldly beings? Is it a reflection of increasing danger in our world, a fad, ... or what?

The top ten answers will be selected and ONE of these will then be randomly chosen as the winner! Yep, that's right, it's not going to be enough to simply put your name in the hat for this one - you'll have to think about your answer!

The competition will start on Wednesday morning 16 June and run through to Sunday night 20 June at 6pm when the winner will be chosen.

So if you want your dose of True Blood - get ready!

The Demon in Me by Michelle Rowen

Michelle Rowen never fails to deliver delightful characters, doses of humour and fun and clever plots - and once again with The Demon in Me she has delivered in spades!

Eden Riley has enough going on as a part owner of a PI firm and a reluctant psychic called in to help the police solve a serial killer crime … she didn't need to suddenly find a demon possessing her. This sounds like the start of a wonderfully light romp doesn't it?  However the real skill Michelle Rowen shows is in weaving her wry take on everyday life with the darker elements in this story, with the result being a far more complex book than expected.

So we have a delightful romantic comedy with a shivery sense of threat and danger pervading the pages. This sounds like the start of a wonderfully light romp doesn’t it? However the real skill Michelle Rowen shows is in weaving her wry take on everyday life with the darker elements in this story, with the result being a far more complex book than expectedRead more ...

Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon finally lets us get a solid dose of Nick! Yes, for years we've read the dark Hunter books, but Nick has stayed as one of our favourite characters, although normally on the periphery. But in Infinity, Kenyon's YA book, Nick finally get's to tell his story of how his life should have been ... so be aware, this is a whole new series, so there are plot deviations from the adult DH series.

'One thing you have to say about Sherrilyn Kenyon is that she writes very, very, well; Infinity is no exception to that rule. ... this is a great fun light-ish read, written with Kenyon's signature style, and highly amusing quips. We get some great characters, all with well defined personalities and quirks, and we get a few of the DH crew making appearances. One of the things I do like about Kenyon is her ability to write a story with numerous characters and still allow each to have their own voice. Read more.....

Lion's Heat by Lora Leigh

Oh how I love the Breed series by Lora Leigh! And, Lion's Heat, the latest in this amazing series is just as heart rending, hot and sexy as any of the other books.

Jonas Wyatt, head of the Bureau of Breed Affairs, has been in most books in the series an a cold and manipulative leader, willing to just about anything to further the breed cause and give the Breeds a future. He has been a character I've disliked the entire series. But now Lora Leigh has given him his own books. Not only that she's made me fall completely in love with this tough, driven leader, always alone and always aware of his isolation.

This book has all the elements we love about Lora Leigh's Breed books - we have the political threats, spies, genetic manipulation, mating heat, barbs (c'mon you know what I mean - OMG!)and above all else a complete dedication towards your mate. Read more ....

The Riley Jensen series has taken us on a fantastic journey with part werewolf, part vampire Riley, her colleagues, friends and enemies. In Moon Sworn, the final in the series, Keri Arthur masterfully wraps up the plot lines and gives resolution to Riley that we had only hoped for in prior books.

'Riley Jensen is one of the most amazing characters in Urban Fantasy! Part werewolf, part vampire, part paranormal detective and all woman. Keri Arthur built layer upon layer throughout the series and now in this, the ninth book, she managed to pull the disparate parts together in a remarkable tour de force.  What stuns me is remembering back to themes that were in book one and recurred throughout the series, that finally come to the fore and are resolved. Quite remarkable.

As always, the writing is clear, the mysteries complex but logical and the emotional depth profound. Read more ....

Red Demon by Deidre Knight

Red Demon grabs us and draws us right back into the thick of the Spartans and their battles to not only defeat demons, but to survive the machinations of the Greek gods. The Gods of Midnight series is an auto buy for me with a wonderfully drawn cast of both human and Spartan characters - with the odd demon and Greek god thrown in for good measure.

Red Demon very much draws on past books, particularly Red Kiss, so make sure that you've read this first. It really is essential. However the real strength of this book comes from the entire cast of characters, most of whom have their time to shine. Emma, Daphne, Nikos, Leonides, Mason, River, Sophie .... all of them add to the delightful banter and charm that draws me to this series. Read more ....

Kitty Norville, werewolf and late night radio host, is now recognized as one of the public faces of the supernatural world. Unfortunately in book seven, Kitty's House of Horrors she finds out just how dangerous being a media personality can be.

I do love Kitty and this book was a wonderful progression in her story. The book builds slowly as the various guests get to know each other. There are wonderful reappearances of characters from past books, plus new beings/personalities to get to know. Because we have a houseful of people it takes quite some time to distinguish between them. However once the action starts, it builds rapidly into a desperate fight for survival. Think a less mannered Agatha Christie whodunit where people are systematically killed off, there is no power or phones, outside help isn't coming and you're completely pinned down by unknown forces. Kitty's House of Horror by Carrie Vaughn

Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris

Sookie Stackhouse is such a wonderful central character. She has her talents and skills, her quirks and idiosyncrasies, but principally she is the centre point around which a diverse range of supernatural beings orbit. Therefore any Sookie book delivers a solid dose of Sookie herself, but the main excitement comes from the vampires, shapeshifters, werewolves or fae that intersect in her life.

For me, Dead in the Family, book ten of the series, is inextricably linked with the prior book Dead and Gone. Without it, DITF, is more somber than we have come to expect; however add it to the prior book and you get a cohesion that ties plots together and allows the dark tones of DITF to be part of an emotional journey. While the plot spirals and grows increasingly complex, Sookie remains our lodestone. Her brand of loyalty and humour consistently bring us back to what we love about her life and her unique perspective:

I added to my mental list of the odd things that I'd done that day. I'd entertained the police, sunbathed, visited at a mall with some faeries, weeded, and killed someone. Now it was powdered corpse removal time. And the day wasn't over yet. Read more .....

Book six of the World of the Lupi, Blood Magic, is absolutely fantastic. I love the world of Lily and Rule, the tight mix of FBI thriller with paranormal danger - AND grandmother is back!!!

Eileen Wilks cleverly draws her readers back into this world with the intersections of Lily's personal life, her mysterious family heritage and professional investigations. These strands are deftly woven so that we end up with a book with real heart plus a puzzle that is surprising and sometimes shocking. It's great seeing the normally pragmatic and unflappable Lily off her stride, while Rule provides the stalwart support to keep her grounded. In fact, throughout the series their relationship has had so many challenges and yet they remain dedicated to each other. Read more ....

My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent

Something is wrong with Kaylee Cavanaugh. She doesn't see dead people, but... She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

My Soul to Take is full of twists and turns, all well written with an incredible emotional intensity that will having you reaching for the tissues in no time!

This is the sort of teen paranormal that makes the cross over into the world of adult fiction. The plot is light enough to fit well into the young adult fiction market (no over the top gruesomeness and no scorching heat), but written with a maturity and emotional commitment that will appeal to adult readers looking for a lighter read. And a final word ......

With the release of the iPad and the increasing popularity of eBooks, there has been a LOT of discussion in recent months about the continuing problem of piracy. The record industry had similar problems when the mp3 revolution came. However, the record industry has suffered piracy since it became possible (even easy) to press that record button on your GhettoBlaster and record songs straight off the radio. As most people aren't prepared to photocopy a library book just to have their own copy, the publishing industry hasn't had the same history of piracy problems. But with the advent of the digital age, people who wouldn't dream of taking a book from their local bookstore, don't think twice about stealing a book off the internet if they can.

Now, I like to think of readers as being a slightly different style of people to those illegal music download people... so I can only think that they're being forced into illegal book downloads because they're housebound, have run out of books to read and have already managed to memorize the Oxford dictionary.

Of course in this situation you can just hop onto Fangtastic Fiction and order the latest scorcher, but we understand that it's still going to be a few days before you've got that wonderful book in your desperate hands... so we're here to help!

Introducing:
Project Gutenberg: If you haven't discovered Project Gutenberg, give it a go. These guys have THOUSANDS of free eBooks. These are books that are out of copyright in America, and as New Zealand & Australia have similar laws, you're good to download. Titles include Pride and Prejudice, Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, Wuthering Heights and the Picture of Dorian Gray - as well a ridiculous amount of non-fiction works. www.gutenberg.org

LibriVox: Ahh, so what you've been illegally downloading is mp3's of your favourite books huh? Well, we've got a legal solution for that too! LibriVox has a huge team of volunteers that have turned public domain books into free downloadable audio books! There are some wonderful readers, and if you think because they're volunteers they're amateurs, think again. The Scarlet Pimpernel (which I highly recommend), Little Women, Les Miserables (in French or English!), all Jane Austen (several versions), Memoirs of Jacques Casanova, there's even a few Andrew Norton & Marion Zimmer Bradley sci-fi's and that's without touching the non-fiction or crime sections! www.librivox.org

So while it's a bit chilly out there, stay tucked up nice and warm. We've got lots of great books to heat up the blood... and we'll help you stay amused until they arrive on your doorstep!
