Ali 2011-12-29

This is a great debut from author, Mitchell Scott Lewis, and a wonderfully light and engrossing crime novel; with characters that are well done, creating believable situations and backgrounds.

However, if you have any interest in astrology you’ll enjoy this book, if you think astrology is a load of hooey then the heavy astrological influences and themes will drive you nuts.

David Lowell made his money in the Stock Market, it took a long time, but eventually he worked out how to use astrology to influence is stock. Now he has a comfortable lifestyle, and enough time to enjoy helping others with their problems. Like Johnny Colbert, client of his daughter Melinda, who’s been accused of murdering a New York City judge. Astrology made David rich, but can he put it to use to solve this crime?

As the mystery unfolds, so do the characters, and slowly the relationships, history and personalities are developed and built upon; all using principles from astrology.

Some readers may be familiar with Mitchell Scott Lewis’ writing as a Financial Astrologer, but many, like me, will be reading this because it looks like an interesting and original crime novel. Although the astrological aspects do make it a very interesting story, I have only an elementary knowledge of astrology, and certainly not enough to know if what I'm reading is real. So the underlying feeling is weariness, there are no cliff notes to help discern fact from fiction, so it’s difficult to tell if the principles are actually based in astrological principles, or if it’s made up out of thin air.

If you take out the astrological aspects of this story, it’s a darn good mystery, with interesting characters and clever twists. But when you add in the astrological aspects it provides a whole new level to the story, that makes it witty, clever and very original.
